Blood Disorders Program

The hematology clinic at Valley Children's provides a broad range of specialized services with a depth of experience to treat all kinds of blood disorders, from the most common to the rarest conditions. Our Center includes an outpatient unit with consultation rooms and an infusion center, as well as access to extensive child life services that ensure a family-centered experience.

The patient population is very diverse in hematology, reflecting the complex nature of the patients we manage. General hematology disorders such as anemia, thrombocytopenia, platelet disorders and white blood cell disorders are among some of the most common diagnoses we treat.

Support services

Our hematology clinic sees more than 25 outpatient visits every day. Our team performs outpatient blood, platelet and immune-globulin transfusions as well as apheresis, for our pediatric patients who require these regimens. Specialized hematology programs include:

  • Hemoglobinopathy Program – Our program provides state-of-the-art management for sickle cell anemia and thalassemia, along with other hemoglobinopathy disorders which are very common in the Central Valley. Our program is the only one in the Central Valley to implement red blood cell apheresis.
  • Apheresis Program – Apheresis is a procedure that aims to prevent frequent emergency room visits for our patients with sickle cell disease by reducing crises.
