Dr. Mariel Marquez is a pediatric hospitalist at Valley Children’s Specialty Medical Group in Madera, California, a role in which she demonstrates her steadfast commitment to children’s health and wellness.
Dr. Marquez’s academic journey started at Grossmont Community College in El Cajon, California, and then continued at the University of California, San Diego, where she completed her Bachelor of Science in Human Biology in August 2013. Her curiosity and commitment to advancing medical knowledge led her to participate in undergraduate research, investigating the potential of ascorbate as a selective cancer cell inhibitor. Her academic excellence and dedication led her to the University of California, Davis School of Medicine in Sacramento, where she earned her Doctor of Medicine in May 2020. During her time at UC Davis, Dr. Marquez was honored for her exceptional performance in the Pediatrics Hematology and Oncology Clerkship.
Before entering medical school, Dr. Marquez gained valuable experience as a credentialing assistant at Vericare in San Diego, where she was responsible for the credentialing of clinicians across various healthcare plans. Her role involved meticulous documentation, collaboration with healthcare representatives, and the development of departmental guides and protocols.
In June 2023, Dr. Marquez completed residency training in pediatrics at Valley Children’s Pediatric Residency Program, dedicating her skills and knowledge to the health and well-being of children. She then took on the title of chief resident, a leadership role that encompasses a wide range of pediatric care, from diagnosis to treatment.
Even before her role as chief resident, Dr. Marquez’s leadership extended into educational settings. Her service as a clinical skills facilitator at UC Davis, mentoring first-year medical students, and her involvement with the Pediatric Student Interests Group and UC Davis Women in Medicine highlights her dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive medical community.
Dr. Marquez has a profound commitment to service, demonstrated through her active participation during medical school in student-run clinics offering free medical services to underserved populations, including the LGBTQ community. Her roles in these clinics went beyond medical care; she also worked as a Spanish interpreter, bridging language barriers and ensuring comprehensive care.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Dr. Marquez is passionate about martial arts, video games, hiking and traveling, reflecting her well-rounded personality and dedication to a balanced lifestyle.
