Healthy Equity CME Series - Bridging the Gap: Advancing Healthcare Equity through Effective Communication and Language Access

October 3, 2024

|

12:15 PM  to  1:00 PM

Join us on Thursday, Oct. 3 from 12:15-1 p.m. for a virtual CME lecture in our Health Equity Series: "Bridging the Gap: Advancing Healthcare Equity through Effective Communication and Language Access."

In this presentation, Dr. Casey Lion will review the science of communication and how healthcare communication can contribute to either worsening or mitigating disparities in care. She will discuss communication across language barriers and highlight research and QI efforts to improve use of professional interpretation. She will also discuss her research program focused on decreasing communication-based disparities in clinical care.

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Critically evaluate their own communication practices, both through self-reflection and through stratified data, to recognize ways they may be contributing to disparities
  • Implement changes to how they communicate with marginalized populations, including families who use a language other than English for medical care
  • Propose or participate in system-level changes to decrease communication-based disparities in their own clinical setting
