Spine Center
We provide evaluation and treatment for a variety of spinal deformities in patients from infancy to adolescence. Conditions we treat include idopathic scoliosis, scoliosis, kyphosis, spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis, tumors, traumatic spine injuries, back pain, and more. Our center also cares for children with a variety of conditions that are often associated with spinal deformity, including cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy and others.
Our orthopaedic surgeons use some of the most innovative procedures to treat some of the most complex conditions. Valley Children’s performed the first VEPTR and first MAGEC procedures in Central California.
- The minimally invasive Magnetic Expansion Control (MAGEC) Spinal Bracing and Distraction System treats severe scoliosis and spinal deformities in growing children. This cutting-edge technique replaces the traditional growing rods, which require eight to 10 spine-lengthening surgeries during the child’s growing years. Physicians lengthen the adjustable rod magnetically every few months, eliminating the pain and recovery time of surgery. Read about the first Central California patient to receive the MAGEC treatment performed by Dr. Michael Elliott.
- The Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib (VEPTR) is a less-invasive approach to treating children with early onset scoliosis or thoracic insufficiency syndrome. This technology controls spinal deformity and is designed to grow with the child, allowing for development of the chest and lungs.
- RisserCasting is a specialized, nonsurgical technique that employs a series of body casts to progressively help improve or correct the child’s curve.
