Dr. Nikita Akkala

Why did you choose Valley Children’s Pediatric Residency?
During my NICU rotation at Valley Children’s Hospital as a medical student, I felt consistently supported and encouraged by both the residents and attendings. I left each day excited and hopeful about the possibility of joining the Valley Children’s family. The program’s strong focus on advocacy closely aligns with my own goals for the future and I knew this residency would uplift me both professionally and personally. Most importantly, being at Valley Children's allows me to give back to the communities in California where I grew up.

Hobbies:
I love playing tennis, indoor cycling, hiking, cooking, reading, and exploring breweries and restaurants!

Advocacy and Research Interests and Accomplishments:
I’m passionate about promoting education for children and families—particularly around nutrition, health literacy, navigating the healthcare system, and creating safe home environments. My previous research focused on reducing unnecessary exposure for newborns by supporting at-home weighing systems for new mothers. I am also a longtime advocate for mentorship, especially for first-generation and immigrant students.

Care Philosophy:
As a pediatrician, I feel privileged to guide patients through some of their most formative years and into adulthood. I believe every child and family deserves to feel seen, heard, and empowered. At the heart of my care philosophy is a commitment to building trust—especially in communities that have historically been overlooked.
